{"id":219,"date":"2018-10-30T17:31:05","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T15:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hakos-astrofarm.com\/en\/?page_id=219"},"modified":"2025-09-14T09:51:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T07:51:22","slug":"infrastruktur","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hakos-astrofarm.com\/en\/infrastruktur\/","title":{"rendered":"Infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Self-sufficient and environmentally conscious\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2026\u00a0 is our philosophy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Eco Awards Namibia<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>Environmental Award for Best Use of Wind and Solar Energy (2007)<br \/>\nEco-Flower Award for ecologically sustainable tourism (2013)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power supply:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over 90% of our electricity is generated by the sun and wind and stored in batteries.\u00a0 Should solar and wind energy be insufficient, a diesel generator is on stand-by.\u00a0 The guest rooms are equipped with customary sockets and at least one Euro socket.\u00a0 Due to the limited capacity of the batteries, power should be used with care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water supply:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our potable water comes from a borehole at the foot of the Hakos mountains, 3 km from the house and is pumped up over a height difference of about 300 m.\u00a0 This is done in two stages with solar pumps to prevent the build-up of excessive pressure in the line.\u00a0 At each stage, the water is stored in 60 m\u00b3 reservoirs.\u00a0 Should clouds persist for longer periods, a diesel generator is available for pumping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water heating:\u00a0<\/strong> Hot water for showers and kitchen\/household operation is also obtained from solar energy.\u00a0 Water is heated by solar collectors and stored in boilers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wastewater:<\/strong>\u00a0 Toilet and kitchen water is routed to septic tanks.\u00a0 These consist of two chambers in which the decomposition process takes place with the help of micro-organisms.\u00a0 Cleaned waste water then flows into an underground soak-away, filled with gravel, and spreads in the ground.\u00a0 Shower water is often used for watering the trees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camping toilets:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here we switched to dry compost toilets.\u00a0 Stylish and at the same time environmentally friendly!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waste disposal:<\/strong>\u00a0 Garbage is separated:\u00a0 glass, plastic, paper, metal, batteries and residual wastes are taken to Windhoek for disposal.\u00a0 Kitchen and garden waste lands on the compost pile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"textblocknoid\"><strong>Internet and telephone access:\u00a0<\/strong> Hakos has three separate internet connections. These serve our Namibian and German telephone lines, as well as the various remote observatory groups. For the remote observatories, we require high data rates of up to 75 Mbps down and 75 Mbps up. Internet access is free for guests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hakos is located in the reception area of \u200b\u200bthe MTC transmission tower on the Gamsberg.\u00a0 For some time now, SIM cards in Namibia have also been required to be registered to individuals. You can purchase an MTC SIM card directly at the airport and have it registered in your name.
